On Sunday, March 16, 2025, version 3.0 of the popular open-source image editing tool – GIMP – was released. This marks the first major update in seven years since GIMP 2.10 and introduces significant changes, including support for GTK 3 and the implementation of non-destructive filters.
What’s New in GIMP 3.0?
One of the most notable improvements is the transition to GTK 3, which enhances UI scaling in high-DPI environments and improves compatibility with Wayland. GIMP had been using GTK 2 for a long time, making this upgrade a considerable effort.
Additionally, GIMP 3.0 introduces non-destructive filters (NDE), allowing users to modify applied effects and adjustments later without having to undo all changes using Ctrl + Z. Every edit, such as brightness adjustments or filter applications, is now recorded separately, enabling users to selectively change or disable specific effects while working on an image.

GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a powerful image editing tool available on Windows, macOS, and Linux. The first version of GIMP was released in January 1996, and it has since become one of the most recognized free tools for graphic editing.
Interestingly, the first Google logo was created using GIMP.
The development of GIMP also led to the creation of the GTK library, which later evolved into a standard GUI framework for Linux. Currently, GTK 4 is the latest version, but due to the complexity of the code, GIMP had remained on the older GTK 2 version until now.
